Madsen Visit, July 2015, Day 1

Day one of pictures, anyway. It's been a while since I took so many pictures that I had to put them on picasa and choose some to post. Here's the album, if you want to look at every single picture: https://picasaweb.google.com/109127305305167007180/MadsenVisitJuly2015     Marty was at work, so they dropped by our house for lunch, some play, and to pick us up. It was quite chaotic, as you can see. Then we went over to the J's, and it got still more chaotic. The fort was assaulted by many, using acrobatic tactics.

A study

There's a Harvard study called the Grant Study. It follows 268 men, Harvard graduates, through almost 80 years, and it contains a wealth of information. Joshua Wolf Shenk wrote a long article about a part of it in 2009. George Vaillant, the manager of the Grant Study for the last 40 years, studied the level of happiness in these men, trying to find the consistent cause. Money? Education? Parental social position? While these factors sometimes helped, they were not consistent indicators of happiness. Vaillant called his findings the two pillars of happiness. "One is love.…

Please help us pick our picture

Not much going on here. I've been too busy working on this to do much of anything else. Meanwhile, this is the boys' idea of fun - handcuffs and skates. Because, why not?   About the picture picking..... we reserve the right (and assert the probability) to completely discard your opinion. We'd still like to know it. Bonus points if you can figure out which one we aren't serious about. 1. The tank was an overwhelming success with six votes. 2. Five for the train interior 3. five votes for Elvis Presley lake... 4. 5.…

Ode to Wes

Yo, Wes, Happy Birthday! You didn't answer your phone, so you forced my hand. Probably the most unusual birthday, barring the one right after you got married.... except, of course, that you had nine months to get used to that before your birthday came around again. So yeah, probably the most unusual birthday. ;) I hope you had (and are having) a good birthday.... 30, right? Do you feel alarmed at all? Like time is speeding up? The fact that Marty is 31 scares me more than me being 28. I like to remind him…

Before and after for Mom

Some before pictures: I was clever about leaving the horribleness out of pictures, so there aren't very many good before pictures. ;) We still need to buy or make some wood boxes for under the workbench to hold leather scraps and contain wires. And we can't decide what to put on the mantle. Whatevs. We're agonizing over what picture we want to print for this wall. We are thinking 2' x 3', but we're stuck. Who knows, maybe we'll just print the same one again, bigger. Maybe I'll do a poll-taking post with potential pictures later this…

July family visit

The people at Oglethorpe know Kurt too well. Poor Jack, he scraped his knee and arm on the way to the park. Uncle Seth, the ever-obliging. A Jockey on..... a turtle..? Rollie, annoying a very patient Teddy. Recorded for posterity. War with Dad

Various

In the car on the way to the Tellus Museum last weekend: Me: "Aren't you proud? I only brought the sewing that required pliers and two needles, not the part that would have needed the six inch ice-pick." Marty: "Yeah, super proud. You'll look great with pliers imbedded in your face." :-P He has a thing about sharp tools in the car. You know, the crash potential. Pliers? Really? When I opened the dishwasher: Jack: "Aww, how cute! They're snuggling." Jack is always ready to give us his unique and very comfortable view of the…
