Another quote for you: (for context, he's talking about people who have suffered a complete break in relationship, but maintain their civility) "Inner strength and outer respect. These are the people who hold a community together, who lead. Unlike the sheep and the wolves, they perform a better role than the script given them by their inner fears and desires. They act out the script of decency, of self-sacrifice, of public honor-- of civilization. And in the pretense, it becomes reality." -Xenocide, by Orson Scott Card I like to wash the berries as soon as…

End of April

The boys say weird things these days.┬áKai was bouncing up and down while Jack played with some sort of new flashlight from Sunday school, and said, "turn out the lights and its pranks will be no use!" What?! A prankster flashlight, huh? Sunday school, you might ask? Well yes. Some friends invited us, and we've been greatly enjoying it. It's cool because you take your kids to the first church meeting, and then, when the second hour might get a little long for them, they go to Sunday School and get assigned a Bible verse…

Various ideas from various people

Marty and I have been reading Larry Niven and Robert Heinlein lately. Their books are full of great quotes. Here are a couple I thought were interesting: "Every reform, however necessary, will by weak minds be carried to an excess, that itself will need reforming." - Samuel Taylor Coleridge This pretty much describes every government that ever existed. "One can travel this world and see nothing. To achieve understanding it is necessary not to see many things, but to look hard at what you do see." - Giorgio Morandi Similarly, Marty and I have always…

Kai’s Birthday

Kai's Birthday was a rainy affair. But still very pleasant. When I asked him how it was, he said, "I don't think I've ever had a better one." We started it out by letting him decorate his own cupcakes. He he. Definitely interesting and fun results. Then he chose re-lighting candles, which he thought was a magnificent joke.

April’s Birthday

The multiplicity of pictures is mostly due to various photographers (Marty, Kurt, Kai, Rollie, and Jack) all playing with the new camera. Eat your heart out, other US states, Georgia's Spring is the prettiest.

Easter 2015

Marty sold his 40D and his macro lens, and bought a new camera, a Sony Nex-6 for the shop and hikes. Therefore, we took far too many pictures, and some of them are obviously sub-par. Kelly's egg was my favorite. The poiple one. Then we went to the park and hunted some more. Then Marty let Kai take some pictures.... Rollie photo-bombed Kai's picture of the sign... "Grandpa. Grandpa. Hold these eggs and I will take a picture of you." The bunny bread. Kelly's came out quite nicely. Mine look like roadkill. Then Kurt started…

If you haven’t any daughters, give ’em to your sons..

Anybody else making hot cross buns for Easter? We take a very loose approach to tradition; I really like it, but the moment it becomes a burden and an unnecessary source of stress, I throw it out, and promise to prepare better next year. Marty and I prefer to enjoy imperfection rather than achieve perfection and feel grumpy and exhausted as a result. For once I'm right on time. This year, I have pledged (to myself) that I won't wait until the night before to make the pashka. Grand resolutions, grand resolutions. We know how…
