Haircuts!

I love the bridge with the white bit on top. I'm embarrassed that I can't remember what kind of wood these two new tops are. Nor are they the same kind. Perhaps Alaskan spruce? Whatever it is, I love the new sound hole. And the grain on the wood is so fine you can hardly see it. Jack is really into bees. He loves them. And butterflies. He follows them around and pets them, especially the bumble bees. Even getting stung once didn't put him off. Then he forgets that they are called Bees and calls them…

As it turned out, the aluminum tailpiece I liked so much buzzed horribly, so Marty made another one, this time with a piece of ebony to mute it, and a clever little slot for a piece of rubber inside.   It's pretty awesome that he can machine his own metal pieces. The boys and I have been doing lots of school work. Well, "lots" for a five year old and a three year old, anyway. Jack stays entertained while we're busy playing with puzzles (it's a bit of a juggling act trying to help Rollie…

Here's Rollie, a few mornings ago. He discovered (see his glee?) that he can make a silly guy with rubberbands and a couple of scrapes. Goof. So silly! Speaking of Rollie, he was rambling to us on the way home from the J's: "If I had a coyote for a wild pet, I would give it a nice dessert if it did not eat me. The nice dessert would be a dead TIGER! Not for me, for the coyote." He also likes to pretend with Kai. I found them on my bed a few days…

An inlay for the current mandolin: Be still my heart. I want one. I'd love to have a mandolin with this heron on it, or maybe a purse, or a belt, or a book, or pretty much anything. I heard a rumor that it was ruined, but I'm afraid to ask for conformation. Even if it is, Marty can make another. But it would be a shame. My purse, dyed and gold leafed. That *does* look less like a alien creature, right? Also, note the crazing? Sigh. We put two coats of lacquer on it, and…

A purse! Maybe.

So, I've been working on a new project -- a purse. We'll see how it works out. I modeled it on a bag I found on etsy that I rather liked. I'm rather fond of 70's leather hippy bags (like this), but Marty doesn't like them much, and I had to admit that they were rather small for a mother of three to carry (am I really a mother of three? Weird...). Especially if I become a mother of four any time soon and need to make sure I have a handy second set of…

Little Boy talk

* Now that Kai is older, he helps me a great deal. And he has a lot of bright, helpful ideas for me, as well. I'm one of those shower-in-the-morning people, so I've had to caution the boys about opening the door to anyone AT ALL during the ten minutes I'm in the shower. Kai assured me he wouldn't. A few days later he had one of his bright ideas and told me that really, if he were to let someone in, he would know what to do. He says that if they were going…

Kids and Eating

I love reading Mommy blogs. I admit it. I don't do much of it, just because I don't read more than one or two blogs, but Lindsey gave me the link to mycakies.com, and those girls are just SO CUTE. I get my little girl fix there. And their parents are such a cute couple, too. She was blogging last week, and mentioned that her girls like vegetables, which I thought was pretty cool. As it turns out, Kai likes vegetables too. Really, just in the last year, but he comes and begs for pieces…

Dinosaurs and leather cuffs

Kai was very proud of himself -- he built a sweet dinosaur out of his blocks. Now, you may not think that is very interesting, but in general, Kai has been so entranced with cars since babyhood that he never played with people or people figurines or animals. Why bother drawing a person when you can draw a car? Why play with a soldier guy when there's a car right THERE. So, I'm impressed. Maybe I shouldn't be, but I still am. ;) Rollie is documenting the great event with my phone. They've figured out…

One mandolin down, countless to go!

Marty finally finished one. You didn't really think he could, did you? Well, maybe you thought he could, but maybe you never thought he WOULD. That's what Kai said, anyway, a few weeks ago: "You're not going to finish a mandolin, are you, Dad?" But he did. And it's sweet. Here are a few pictures of it unfinished. Today, tonight, and for the next few days, Marty is machining parts for four more that he will make in various woods. Of course, this isn't the color it will be. I really like the black and…

This last Saturday, we went to the airplane museum. The boys loved it. It was a cool, cloudy day.       This was supposed to be a mean face. I think they need to work on it in front of a mirror or something. And these were supposed to be funny faces. Maybe Rollie just does everything backwards. That would certainly make sense with his personality. Yep, just hanging out. Relaxing under an airplane...   Running silly races under an oak tree.   Jack, sneaking up on the camera, hands clasped.   My fox…
